Books I’ve written
Small spaces explores the principles of design that can be applied to making very small yards into truly beautiful, livable landscapes.
Sixteen garden projects are presented and such concepts as enlarging by division, terracing slops, adding interest with detail, balancing hardscape with softscape, creating destination areas and other techniques for making the most of small spaces are explored and demonstrated with before and after images.
Each concept is clearly explained and illustrated with many images. This book has brought me clients from around the world.

Water Features for Small Gardens presents every type of water feature including tub gardens, ponds, streams, water falls, raised formal and informal fountains and wall fountains.
Included are before and after images, beautiful examples of each type and diagrams and explanations for the construction and installation of each type of water garden. Unlike many water garden books, this book presents water features that most anyone can create on small properties or large.
This book was rated by CSM as one of the ten best gardening books of the year and called a ‘must have’.

Beyond The Lawn
Beyond the lawn was written at the publishers request and explores a variety of inovative and attractive alternatives to the ubiquitous lawn.
“The author draws from his own repetoire as well as from the work of many other designers to present a fairly comprehensive compilation of approaches to replacing resource intensive lawns.”
The primary values of this book are in the many creative solutions to creating a garden without or with little lawn, and in the analysis if each garden shown.

Hardscaping, Why and How to use Structure in the landscape presents eight categories of uses for different structures to enhance the landscape. Structure for Balance and Structure to add dimensionality, for example.
Each Chapter has a variety of projects demonstrating the particular use – including structures for delineating space, for creating focal points, for ornamentation and for outdoor living. Each chapter is followed by diagrams, detailed explanations and before and after images showing how to build a variety of these hardscape elements.

Hardscaping
“ I just wanted to say how fantastic (and endlessly useful) you book is. I am having to re-vamp a very ugly school quad and am now suitably inspired to take the next step! Many thanks.
